My resesarch focuses on developing microscopic optical contrasting (label-free) modalities to efficiently visualize unstained living cells. These include (1) modulation-relief ("schlieren") microscopy as a competitor of much more costly differential interference contrast (DIC Nomarski) microscopy, and (2) phase-contrast microscopy devoid of 'halo' artifacts otherwise present in commercially available microscopes. Recently I started to engage in (3) Raman microscopy where cell staining is largely contraindicated, and hope to couple it with one of the above-mentioned optical-contrasting modalities [1,2] in order to add a much-needed morphological context to the chemical images Raman microscopy provides.
